South Deerfield, MA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Douglas Auctioneers is honored to announce the December 19 auction of the estate collection of the late\u00a0Jack Paul Maroon (1919\u20132008)<\/strong>, a prolific American painter whose work has been held in the family\u2019s care since his passing. This remarkable, fully intact collection\u2014totaling\u00a0more than 800 paintings<\/strong>\u2014offers collectors an unprecedented opportunity to acquire works spanning seven decades of a distinguished mid-century career.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Maroon is celebrated for his vivid, expressive depictions of urban life, particularly the dynamic pulse of\u00a0New York City<\/strong>. His acclaimed works numbering over 90, including\u00a0New York City Parade<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a081 West Street and Bethune Street Pier<\/em>, form part of his expansive series\u00a0\u201cManhattan Corners,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0a powerful visual chronicle of the city\u2019s energy, architecture, and people. Characterized by bold color, movement, and emotional depth, his paintings reflect the vibrancy and complexity of modern urban environments.\u00a0 Also in the New York City venue he captured the theatres of New York with over 80 theatres represented.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Beyond his New York oeuvre, Maroon traveled extensively throughout the world, capturing the culture, landscape, and daily life of the places he visited. The estate includes significant groups of works from\u00a0Paris<\/strong>,\u00a0French ch\u00e2teaux<\/strong>,\u00a0Japan<\/strong>, the\u00a0Caribbean<\/strong>, and broader regions of\u00a0Europe<\/strong>. His line-drawn portraits – depicting individuals encountered both abroad and in New York City from Studio 54 to the Broadway culture – highlight his remarkable observational skill and artistic sensitivity, and stand out for their scope and quality.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Maroon\u2019s career included\u00a0solo exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery and the Flynn Gallery in New York<\/strong>, among many others. His illustrations appeared widely in books, journals, and magazines, contributing to the visual record of 20th-century American life.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
